This case was one of the stranger ones I'd had lately, which, working in central London, was saying something.

Apparently, this guy - David Godolphin - got run down on a Bayswater street. Bayswater is quite posh, not usually the sort of place for a hit and run. His friend found him, ran inside and promptly collapsed. I would have said I thought she'd got hit, too, but there was no sign of damage on her except a little bleeding from her mouth. She'd bitten into her tongue hard.

Now they were both unconscious. This made sense for Mr Godolphin - he'd suffered serious head trauma. I was amazed his neck wasn't broken, considering the speed the police said he must have been hit at. He'd been thrown thirty feet. He had a broken leg and some cuts, but aside from that he was pretty ok, body wise. It was too early to say if he'd been brain damaged, though. There was some swelling around his brain, which was to be expected...

It was Tara Maclay who really puzzled me. Not a scratch on her, although the palms of her hands did seem almost... burned. How was that possible? And the bitten tongue suggested to me either that she'd been jarred hard and had bitten down on it accidentally, or that she'd bitten it because of some great pain.

They'd both been under for twelve hours now. And this - this was the weirdest thing. When we tried to move them more than a few feet apart, their heart rates faltered. I thought I was imagining it at first, but it kept happening. So they're side by side now. I don't understand it. But something I've learned whilst being a doctor is that there's a hell of a lot I don't understand - and sometimes it's better that way. Sometimes it's best not to ask too many questions.

I glanced at my watch. Just enough time for a cigarette break. I stepped outside and lit up, leaning against the wall and taking deep drags. You'd think being a doctor I'd know better, but sometimes the thought of my cigarette break is all that gets me through a shift.

I crept into the hospital and took very slow steps, almost lurking in the halls, as I tried to find the room I was told to go to. My heart was beating so fast that it seemed to become this steady hum in my chest. And there it was, the door. I opened it slowly, careful in case I'd disturb anyone behind it.

I peered inside, and there was David, on the bed, with Tara in the bed next to him. I turned around and slammed my fists against the door. "FUCK! FUCK FUCK FUCK!" I leaned into the door, breathing heavily. This couldn't be happening. Not after I had gotten stabbed, and Triffy had gone insane, not after everything was coming together. One more relationship that would end, one more dead end for Lynn Thomas. I turned around, leaning away from the door, crying softly. I glanced at the bed and saw David, his heart monitor softly beating. "David..."

I moved up close to his bed, and reached for his hand. Down on my knees, I held his hand tightly. "David...I'm so sorry...I didn't mean...Wake up," I said reaching over to brush his hair softly. "Please wake up! I need you...I love you..."

I heard the door open behind me, and I snapped around to see who was there.

I could feel my hand tremble as I reached for the handle of the door of the room Tara had been put in. All I could gather about what had happened was that David, the head of the council had been hit by a car and that something had also happened to Tara, though no one was clear on what it was. All anyone knew was that she was in as bad or maybe worse condition as David was.

I took a deep breath, slowly releasing it as I eased the door open, steadying myself for what I might find on the other side of the door as I took a step inside the room.

"Tara..." I said in a soft voice, almost a whisper when I saw her laying on the bed. It wasn't until after I took a couple steps closer that I realized there was a third person in the room.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone else was in here." I said keeping my voice soft as I turned to the woman by the other bed.

A young lady had walked into the room and looked at Tara on the bed. "I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone else was in here." She had realized she wasn't the only person in the room. I stood up slowly and took a deep breath, trying to collect myself.

"No it's fine..." I tried to think of the girls name, I recognized her from the council, but my mind was drawing a blank.

"You're hear to see Tara?"

"You're hear to see Tara?"

"Yeah." I answered. "Has there been any change for either of them?" I thought it only polite and I was a bit concerned for David, even though I barely knew him. He was a good friend of Tara's and that was good enough for me.

"I'm Dawn Summers." Introducing myself to the woman. The way she looked at me gave me the impression that she knew me, but at the moment couldn't put a name with the face.

"Has there been any change for either of them?"

It would have been nice if I had known. "I'd assume not. I haven't seen a doctor yet."

"I'm Dawn Summers." I remembered instantly that she was Buffy's younger sister, and I gave a slight nod and replied "Lynn Thomas."

I looked down at the floor, and sighed, unable to think of anything else to say. Glancing back at David, I hoped that he would wake up to save me from this awful silence.

"I just don't understand...We were supposed to go away for Christmas today. And now...How do these things happen?"

I gave a nod when the woman gave her name. I had heard the name and knew that Lynn Thomas was one of the higher ups on the council, somewhere just below the position David held I think.

"I just don't understand...We were supposed to go away for Christmas today. And now...

"I was suppose to spend Christmas with Tara, well I suppose I am spending Christmas with her, except not in the way we had planned." Talking as I moved the short distance to Tara's bed. There was a chair in the corner which I took the liberty of moving over to Tara's bed.

How do these things happen?"

"I don't know. I think if we did, we might have the power to prevent things like this from happening, but all we have is a feeling of being powerless to do anything."

"I'm here, Tara." I said even though she was unconscious, gently brush a couple loose strands of her blonde hair from her cheek.

"You know they say that even though a person in unconscious or in a coma, they can still here what is being said to them." I said, casting a brief glance to Lynn.

I nodded. Coma...I hated that word. It was ugly and full of uncertainty. All I wanted was to be sure of things...

"Excuse me a moment. I need to make a phone call..." I left the room quickly and made a dash to find a phone.

I nodded to Lynn when she excused herself from the room to go find a phone to make a call.

"I wish you could tell me what happened Tara."I said, looking down at her. Though she was in a coma like David was she did not have the same injuries he had sustained. All she had was burns on her palms, which definitely had not been the result of being hit by a car.

I don't know how long I sat there, just watching her as if that would bring Tara back to consciousness. I felt extremely helpless and was really wishing Buffy, Willow or Giles were here.
